Weekend Learning's

The first week back at work after a little vay-cay is always a difficult one. Strangely I was excited to be back. Yes we all know I love my job but I also love my life and even if I do occasionally need to get away for a little escapism I have come to the realization that it has only made me more aware of how blissfully happy I am in my own shoes. How sweet and how pleasant things have changed from what they once were when I literally wanted to flee from my life on a daily basis. Shame. I am so glad I am no longer that sad waif of a lonely bird. Now that my friends is life altering education! But do not fret I have some more for you, this is what I learned;

  • “Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you set up a life you don’t need to escape from.” - Seth Godin. YES!
  • Every flower must grow through dirt… I did this and now I am a flower amongst many other flowers instead of a flower amongst weeds which is where I would have been if I did not have the courage to change and let go of my life so drastically, scary to think.
  • Signatures in Morningside shopping center is by far, fast becoming, one of my favourite restaurants in Johannesburg. Well worth the prices, every meal I have had (and sampled) is divine, the ambiance is one of splendor and the live music is something I cannot get enough of.
  • Sobremesa (n.) the time spent around the table after lunch or dinner, talking to the people you shared the meal with; time to digest and savor both food and friendship. This is my favourite part.
  • The fact that you take and hold my hand no matter what when walking from A to B with such purpose still gives me butterflies. It is little things like this which keeps love alive.
  • Randloards is still an amazing venue with the best views of Jozi and with the right group, the best fun!
  • "Be with someone that requires you to grow, makes you forget your problems, holds your hand, likes to kiss, appreciates art, and adores you." - Mama Zara
  • There is nothing that a smoothie can't fix. Trust me… if you know your stuff, and I do, the right recipe can cure anything. Mild headaches, cramps, bad skin, bad moods, sore muscles… they have become my saving grace, I love them, swear by them, won't go a day without one.
  • I cook on sundays now. I make lunches for the week. It saves money too. I find bustling around the kitchen in my pajama's ridiculously therapeutic and the smell of sweet potato and pumpkin soup is mouth watering. It is nice. And food is my little hobby on the side which keeps me sane and reminds me that having a five day intensive desk job is okay as long as I'm back in the kitchen Friday nights and over the stove sundays. Good times.

Have smooth sailing weeks strawberry puffs! And remember, spring is just there, see it, over the hill! Yay!

xoxo

PS. May my heart be kind, my mind fierce and my spirit brave.

This is true, my love.

Sun, skin, love.

You do not realize you need a holiday till you are on holiday. And my goodness was it needed! As you know the boyfriend and I planned a little getaway for us and the pup. It was fantastic and I hope the first one of millions and millions! This is a double whammy so, make a cuppa and get comfortable, it should be a goodie.
  • I've never been so excited or happy to just be bored and do nothing with someone. Sitting in silence with someone and enjoying every second of it? Your company brings me joy.
  • If you live in the Durban area (or are visiting like we were) Olive and Oil is a fantastic restaurant with great lunchtime specials. They were also very accommodating of our four legged friend and the service was great.
  • “Trust whatever He has for you. It will be better than anything you can plan for yourself.” Francis Chan (Crazy Love)
  • When one has a dog in ones party, one needs to always be on the lookout for dog friendly venues. BringFido is a website which tells you all the dog friendly places in your city. It is a little slow in South Africa but has a few recommendations. It was able to give me a list of all the beaches we could take Billy Button the Boxer, bow wow!
  • “Stars got tangled in her hair whenever she played in the sky.”Laini Taylor
  • Brevisbrook is a lovely little BnB in Pietermaritzburg. We felt very relaxed in the peaceful country style accommodation set in lush surroundings and came to call it 'home' by the end of our trip. Thank you Dave and Normaine, it was blissful!
  • Lying on the beach, watching my guy and his dog play, could be on my list of new favourite things. Sunshine, sea, sand and silliness!
  • I am not lucky, I am blessed.
  • "She lives with hurricane eyes and he fell in love with the way the waves collapsed onto her cheeks." - Christopher Poindexter
  • There is nothing more fun than eating oats out of a jar. It is just a trivial thing that brings joy… Consol jars do the trick… go on, you can do it.
  • "You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop." - Rumi
  • One forgets how much you need the sea. I for one am a child of the sun. I need it. It feeds me, that vitamin D feeling, well I can lie in the sun for hours like a sponge sucking in the heat, recharging my cold withered bones from this pithy winter we've had. My how I feel the glow just from that one day.
  • The Wolfpack in Joburg, is the new hotspot on the Parkhurst strip. A bustling, trendy burger venue with gourmet pub food and craft beers on tap, you're more than likely going to attend someones Birthday there in the next few weeks. The Moroccan burger, do it!

Have a great week pretty plums… smell that? Spring is in the air!

xoxo

PS. Watching those brown cows on the side of the road checking for holes in the fence…

It's the little things that make the biggest impact,
they also show you care.

Tata for now

Sunday, 11 August 2013
Yes we are, us Leo babies.

Two lion cubs are going on an adventure with a boxer. Well sort of. The boyfriend and I are going on a little road trip so there will probably not be any Weekend Learnings news week. I know, do not be glum my chum! For the week after that you will get a double shot of weekend wonder.

Besides, this Coco Lion needs one hell of a break and so does her boyfriend and his sweet pup. So tata for now and keep smiling my little fairy friends!

Xoxo

PS. Those who wonder are not always lost.

...or you might just get stuck...

Zucchini Pancakes

Wednesday, 7 August 2013
Yum, zucchini, get in my tum!

So if you are a regular on Cocobutton you'll know that I (more often than not) shy away from meat. I am obsessed with vegetables. And zucchini has, and will always be one of my favorite. You can dice them, slice them, ribbon them, even make them into strings for 'pasta' with salads and sauces.

These little (marrow)  babies are high in vitamin C, they prevent colon cancer, they also contain powerful antioxidant properties and they promote anti-inflammatory properties that prevent heart disease. Amazing! Here is a recipe for you to use up some of that left over Zucchini;

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 cups grated zucchini not peeled and squeezed dry with a kitchen towel (this might go green, sorry)
  • 1/4 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp. minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 3/4 cup flour (I use gluten-free whole wheat… health freak over here!)
  • Olive oil for frying.

INSTRUCTIONS

In a large bowl stir grated zucchini, lemon juice, garlic, onion, salt, pepper and egg with a wooden spoon.
Add in Parmesan Cheese and flour and stir to combine. You do not want to beat this mixture. It can be over beaten and effect the outcome of the batter. Now the mixture might seep a little while you are cooking, rather move the mixture up the side of the bowl and let the liquid remain. This is due to the lemon and the zucchini, not to worry!
Place some batter, about a tablespoon size, into medium hot oil and lightly spread out from the center with a spoon. Cook slowly for about 3 minutes or until lightly browned and sealed enough that you can flip it over with a spatular and cook remaining side until it is lightly browned and cooked through. Remember, cook with love!!

Serve warm plain as a starter or with avocado and tomatoes, they are so moreish make sure you make enough!

Xoxo

PS. Mmm you are a tasty little morsel.

And I do... all of the above, *wink!

A scene from our Filthy Animal themed Birthday party.
Or an artwork by Anne Wilson... you decide.

Today is my Birthday. Yay. Or not to yay. Birthdays are always weird. I do not know how I really feel. I have been crying on my birthday since I can remember, high school days to be exact. No no, it isn't like all day sobbing, I'm not a basket case! It is just like a quick burst of early morning showers and then it is over. Although I do sometimes look forward to it, I do not really feel like it is a necessity and I wouldn't be horrified if I skipped it all together. At least I could possibly skip being a year older? Well this is what I learned;
  • "Crying does not indicate you are weak. From birth, it has been a sign that you are alive.' This seems fitting for today. I think it is okay to cry a little, I'm just a girl saying goodbye to another year of my life with a few little tears.
  • I love Anne Wilson. Her illustrations are just to die for. Too cute! Fox meets bear in a forest… love!
  • I enjoyed this weekend mainly for two reasons. Friday night was spent celebrating the birth of my boyfriend eating and laughing (and boy am I glad he was born!). And Saturday was spent being ridiculous as a Filthy Animal at our (my bf and my) joint party-party. It was good fun!
  • “I was born with an enormous need for affection, and a terrible need to give it.”Audrey Hepburn
  • Eating anything and everything gluten free is my new favourite thing to do. Gluten free pasta is a million times nicer and the variety of flavors is immense. Also, I generally feel better, you will too.
  • “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”Marcus Aurelius
  • You know you're on the right track when you become uninterested in looking back.
  • But if there is anything I learn from each Birthday, it the quality of the friendships and the people I have versus the quantity… the quality was poor. Happiest birthday ever, shared with my favourite souls… I hope they are always like this from now on.

Have a pretty week, and happy woman's day to the ladies!

Xoxo

PS. We laugh till we cry, read each others minds, live with a smile, make it all worthwhile.

Tyler, I missed you.

Take flight, August, it is time to fly!

The weekend before birthday weekend is always a dull one. Not this one. Walked 4kms, went to town, went to a club, made another pizza, it was busy. And today, today is the first day of the best month of the year. Gosh how I love august. Everything just goes right! It is my birthday, yes but it is just the month where winter winds down to Spring and I truly do get a spring in my step. It is also my brothers birthday and now, my boyfriends birthday. It is a special month, a gold feeling month, a month with a Lions rawr! And I am so glad she's finally here. Anyway, this is what I learned in the last weekend of July;
  • Strength lies in the nights of peaceful slumber.
  • “Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”Buddha
  • I am still surprised when the people I put before my own needs never even consider me before theirs. When will Coco learn?
  • "God, how I ricochet between certainties and doubt." - Sylvia Plath.
  • Great Dane on a Saturday afternoon is Chaos! Since the last Saturday I went there, it has become rather busy. Try get a table, if you dare.
  • Orphic. (adj.) mysterious and entrancing, beyond ordinary understanding.
  • Every summer has a story. Don't get me wrong winter has stories too, but I feel I live more in one summer weekend than I have the capacity to live in three winter months. I need a holiday from this winter, ASAP!
  • There are many things I enjoy doing. Sitting in the sun lying on you, talking about nothing is definitely one of them.
  • You can now follow Woolworths Taste Mag on Pinterest. I KNOW! So exciting / excited meep! Boards of foodie joy and wisdom, hello!
  • "Ive never been a millionaire but I just know I'd be darling at it." - Dorothy Parker.

Have a lovely first week of August my little fly-aways, keep whistling.

Xoxo

PS. “You either like me or you don’t. It took me twenty-something years to learn how to love myself, I don’t have that kinda time to convince somebody else.”Daniel Franzese.

Always.
